HOUSEHOLD ITEMS THAT COULD BRING HARM TO YOUR DOGS
As a part of your family, you take utmost care of your dog to keep him healthy
and safe. But sometimes there are certain things we tend to overlook that can
possibly bring harm to our pets. Keeping him safe is one thing important to you
so try to eliminate the possible dangers around your dog. One thing that you
also have to be aware of is household danger. Here are some of the household
dangers you should be looking out for.
It is important that you keep the chemicals and the cleaners secured or locked
away. The strong odor of these solutions are enough to discourage further
exploration but not with antifreeze. Antifreeze does not have a really strong
odor or foul taste so your dog could possibly lap it up as easily. There are
antifreeze brands that have used additives to make their products less
attractive to animals. A small amount is enough to cause liver damage to your
dog which can eventually lead to its death. Make sure that you keep your dog out
of sight whenever you are using antifreeze and immediately clean up spills and
properly dispose of the rags you have used.
Another household danger is the rat and mouse poison or killer. This is very
appealing to some dogs and most likely they will tend to chew on those poisonous
blocks. This could be fatal when your dogs are left untreated. It is important
that the dog is given immediate treatment as soon as possible when you find out
about that he has eaten the poison as it may be too late if the symptoms have
set in.
The small items around the house could also pose potential choking hazards. Your
children should be taught to keep their small or tiny toys away from your dogs
to prevent them from chewing on them or getting hurt with shattered plastics and
choking on small pieces or parts. Aside from toys, you should also keep your
coins away from them. There is a possibility for your dog to develop zinc
toxicity that could possibly lead to death when he gets to swallow a penny that
was minted after 1982.
It is also important that you keep over-the-counter medications away from your
dogs to prevent him from chewing on the bottles or accidentally ingesting the
drugs. It is though not uncommon that dogs get poisoned with consuming
medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or aspirin.
There are also food that could be harmful to dogs and on of these is chocolate
which is very well known to cause a problem to dogs. This causes the dog not to
be able to metabolize theobromine, an ingredient in chocolates and other food
containing caffeine. When they have ingested the food, it will remain in the
dog's system for hours which causes internal bleeding, heart attacks or
seizures. Half an ounce of chocolate per pound of the dog's body weight is
enough to kill a dog while your dog will gladly devour on that chocolate when he
gets the chance. Other food such as raisins, onions, macadamia nuts, grapes,
xylitol, and hops can also harm your dogs when eaten.
It is important that you keep your dogs safe from these things. Like little
children, harmful things should be out of their reach.
